co-artist: adelhee

“It occurred on the eight-lane road. The accident was unavoidable.” One day when this collaborated project was in full swing, artist Hyun Hee Chung, a.k.a. adelhee, shared a short storey on her social network. In that posting, she detailed her experience adopting an 8-month-old puppy who had an iron rod in her leg due to her inability to avoid an accident, much like herself. The artist was already raising another cat and dog at the time, and she would not have dared to raise such a large dog. However, when the X-ray revealed that “the dog’s stomach contains rubbish that shouldn’t be there,” she realised she had to take responsibility for her. This is the story of “Ddoksooni” (which translates as “smartie”), the strong dog who has been guarding her house for eight years in Daejeon for three ladies – the artist sisters and their mother. After reading this story, I kept thinking about it.Certain events in life occur for no apparent purpose. This is not God’s will or destiny. It is purely coincidental. However, we were unable to flee the area at the moment.Following the event, the artist was left gravely injured and confined to a wheelchair. She was currently enrolled in a PhD program in physics. There were several moments when she wished she could abandon both her personal life and her studies. However, her father, mother, sister, friends, supervisor, seniors, juniors, and colleagues all helped her cling on and keep going. She couldn’t avoid all these loves, so she survived and became a PhD. She is unable to avoid earning a living and hence lectures at a university. At one point, she desired nothing more than to be a teacher.Individuals she encounters in a wheelchair communicate with artist adelhee using their entire body. Even if their mouths remain closed, they can communicate with their eyes. It goes in good ways and in bad ways as well. You can recognise when you are really hurted, whether physically or psychologically, that humans are animals before they become humans.Without any explanations as to what others think of you or how you appear to them, you can pick up on others’ emotions or ideas in the same way that animals do. And in the majority of cases, that premonition is correct. Some people suddenly “grant” aid “in advance” that the artist does not expect or request, while others are irritated and ignore her “before” she asks for assistance. And adelhee claims to be repeatedly harmed by the situation. That is why, whenever she does something, she uses her hands to stitch. She is not attempting to create anything polished and beautiful; rather, she is exercising mental discipline in order to forget about everything and become completely immersed in it.As a result of the curator’s suggestion, “Focus on your anger,” she was reminded of such shameful instances. Even her long-forgotten emotions were reawakened, and she relapsed into depression. The artist cut the fabric and created a scene in which people’s eyes were wounded with sword-like objects. Additionally, she created wheels for her vehicle, and she created cats…She also created her first cat, “Choco,” whom the artist sisters adore and miss dearly, as well as eight additional cats that they are currently caring for. She fashioned them in various sizes. She continued to create one, two, and more… Constantly, over and over, until the feelings passed from her, until those scenes no longer pained her.She discovered this when she finally produced her first season of “Brush Off.” The scars she perceived vividly were not as deep as she imagined, and the wounds did not obstruct her wheels. Of fact, they temporarily halted her, but not indefinitely. The sensation of pain is forgotten. However, scars will remain. And the artist is no longer fearful of being harmed in advance.Such glances and hearts are merely coincidental encounters that pass without being able to avoid them for a time. They are as tiny and insignificant as falling leaves brushing her hair for a brief period. The artist has a younger sister who has been by her side for 20 years as if she were one body, as well as animal companions who trust and share affection unconditionally. On the day she returns from being wounded outside, friends who comfort her with their warmth and kind eyes, and friends who make her laugh when she herself wants to cry.It cannot be stated that the love between sisters and between species, that is, the love that surrounds artist Jung, is trivial in comparison to other loves.”I adore my world, and they adore me.” She is convinced.By the way, how is Ddoksooni doing these days? She has developed into an excellent security guard, being gentle with the artist’s family but fierce with others. Regardless of how intelligent she is, her name fits her well, yeah, it really does.
